Biography:


Alassane Ouattara was born in Dimbokro, Cote d'Ivoire, in 1942. He is the current President of Cote d'Ivoire. He studied at Drexel University and also at the University of Pennsylvania. He worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as an economist for most of his professional career.


He was named as the Prime Minister of Cote d'Ivoire in 1990 he held this post until 1993. He would return to work for the IMF after his stint as the Prime Minister of Cote d'Ivoire ended. He was barred from running in the 1995 presidential elections, and also from the 2000 elections, because not both of his parents were from Cote d'Ivoire.


He was allowed to run in the 2010 presidential elections, eventually defeating the incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo. Gbagbo would however contest the results and refuse to step down, claiming victory for himself. This would lead to a brief period of civil war, Gbagbo would eventually be arrested and Ouattara was officially sworn in has Cote d'Ivoire President on May 6th 2011.

Guillaume Soro was born in Diawala, Cote d'Ivoire, in 1972. He is the current Prime Minister of Cote d'Ivoire. Before becoming prime minister he was the leader of the rebel forces called 'New Forces'. He held several posts in Laurent Gbagbo's government but eventually rebel members of government boycotted these posts and hostilities resumed, until in 2007 he was named prime minister as part of the new peace agreement.

Biography:


Laurent Gbagbo was born in Gagnoa, Cote d'Ivoire, in 1945. He is the current President of Cote d'Ivoire. He holds a doctorate from the Paris Diderot University, and was a history teacher, before joining politics. He ran in the 1990 presidential elections but lost the vote. Gbagbo and his party boycotted the 1995 presidential elections. He ran in the 2000 elections and apparently won these, but his rival Robert Guei claimed victory, however an uprising in his favor forced Guei to run away and Gbagbo effectively took control.


Gbagbo's government survived a coup attempt in 2002, but lost control of some parts of the country to the rebel armies. In 2004 a peace agreement fell through and fighting resumed, until a new deal was reached in 2007 whereby the rebel leader Guillaume Soro would become prime minister. Following this Gbagbo declared the civil war officially over in 2008.
