He studied in Canberra his field of study was Chinese language and history. In 1981 he began his career as a civil servant and served in several posts relating to Chinese relations, he also held China related posts in the private sector. In 1998 he was elected to parliament for the first time. Following the 2001 election, he became the shadow minister for Foreign Affairs, after seeing several leaders of the Labor Party fail to get elected, he was elected party leader in 2006. Kevin Rudd's leadership finally offered a real alternative to John Howard's government, in his own words, the Labor would now be "an alternative, not just an echo of the Howard government." In 2007 Rudd and the Labor Party won the elections, his first act as prime minister was to sign the Kyoto Protocol. He also apologized in the name of Australia, to the Indigenous population.
